Steve was also head of the Policy Profession in the DfT. Before becoming Director General, Steve spent the previous five years as Roads Director responsible for exploring how to secure the best performance out of the road network, including the potential of road pricing. Within transport he has previously worked on a variety of issues including rail franchising, the sponsorship of London Transport and the subsequent creation of Transport for London. Steve worked in several Government departments since first joining the civil service in 1983, including spells at the Government Office for London, at the Cabinet Office, as secretary to the Civil Service Management Board, and from April 2001 to January 2004, as a Director at the Office of the Rail Regulator. Steve, who lives in Sussex, is an active motorist, motorcyclist and occasional cyclist.
Steve takes up his new role as a Rees Jeffreys Trustee in February of next year.
